What makes ISSA’s Mandarin Chinese Program Unique? As Chinese New Year approaches, the International School of San Antonio is preparing to celebrate one of the most important holidays in the Chinese-speaking world. Across our Mandarin classrooms, students are exploring the traditions, history, and culture behind this celebration while continuing their full immersion academic program from Pre-K3 through 5th grade.
Like our Spanish and French programs, Mandarin students are fully immersed in their target language while meeting rigorous academic standards.
One distinctive feature of ISSA’s Mandarin program is its continuity. Families and students do not need to transition to another school to continue immersion in the elementary years. From Pre-K3 through 5th grade, students remain within the same learning community. This consistency supports both academic progress and long-term relationships.
Mandarin students also learn alongside peers in French and Spanish immersion tracks. They play at recess, have English class together, participate in the same extracurricular activities, etc. Students learn about each language’s cultures, participate in school performances together, and even learn each other’s languages through our third language class. This instills cultural understanding and acceptance at a young age that they will carry with them throughout their lives.
Another important strength of our program is our native-speaking Mandarin teaching team. Our educators represent different regions of the Chinese-speaking world, bringing varied accents, vocabulary, and cultural traditions into the classroom. Exposure to these differences allows students to develop broader linguistic understanding and cultural knowledge.
Throughout the year, cultural traditions are integrated into learning. Activities include traditional crafts, calligraphy, cooking experiences, and storytelling that connect language learning with cultural understanding. Earlier this year, our Mandarin students had the opportunity to deliver a special message to the talented Harbin ice sculptors featured at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa. In collaboration with SA Live, students recorded a touching tribute in Mandarin, connecting their classroom learning to a real-world cultural event. Experiences like this allow students to use language authentically and confidently.
The International School of San Antonio’s Chinese program is one of the few to offer full immersion and Core Knowledge Curriculum in Early Learning. The Primary School has a Cognia-accredited curriculum aligned with Texas Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and enhanced with global best practices in education, such as Singapore math. As a secular school, ISSA’s mission is to meet and exceed state academic guidelines. While in our immersion program, a student will achieve this in Chinese just as in English.
Mandarin Chinese is spoken by more than 900 million people worldwide and plays an increasingly important role in global communication. Learning it gives students access to a major part of the world’s economic and cultural landscape.
Beyond language acquisition, immersion shapes how children think. They don’t just memorize vocabulary; they learn how language functions. This strengthens problem-solving skills, reading comprehension, and vocabulary development across subjects.
One ISSA parent shared:
“Language learning is important to us because finding common ground is what builds bridges of peace. When people seem different, we want our son to see friends, not enemies—and to find real solutions to problems in the world.”
— Michelle Nunez, ISSA Parent
Additionally, the International School of San Antonio is the only school to offer Chinese immersion preschool classes at The DoSeum. Our Morning Program currently offers half-day preschool classes twice a week. With the museum as their classroom, students are immersed in their target language through hands-on exploration and play. This is separate from our main location campus.
As one of the premier San Antonio private schools, we invite you to tour our campus and learn more about our language immersion education.
