Primary School

Ages 5-10: Building bilingual skills and a love of learning

Primary School's international curriculum is delivered in students' target language. Across all coursework, elementary students are encouraged to question the world around them and solve problems in real-life contexts.

English language arts are part of the curriculum. By gradually increasing English language instruction time throughout the Primary School curriculum, we strengthen proficiency skills in English and the target language. Students move toward full mastery of both languages as they develop literacy, reading comprehension, oral expression, vocabulary, and grammar skills.
At the same time, students build solid foundations in mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, technology applications, art, and music. ISSA students are fully prepared to transition to middle school in either English or the target language of their choice.

Academic Framework

Our educational philosophy is rooted in constructivism and transdisciplinary learning with students at the center of the learning process. This enables them to acquire common skills and concepts across disciplines, strengthening problem-solving abilities in real-life contexts.
Our academic plan incorporates global best practices, including:
  • Language immersion education
  • International methods for teaching literacy
  • Mandarin Chinese: Emphasizes tone production, stroke identification, radical semantics, character formation, and daily practice with phonetic-semantic compounds
  • Spanish: Uses the phonetic-syllabic method, aligned with Texas SLAR standards
  • French: Employs a syllabic reading/writing method, aligned with the French national curriculum
  • Constructivist teaching methods
  • Transdisciplinary topics that integrate various subjects
  • Singapore Math
  • STEAM and technology applications
