On Saturday, April 11th, the International School of San Antonio held its annual FrancoFun Festival. Spread out over the school’s main campus, this festival highlighted Francophone countries around the world. From Morocco to French Polynesia, French is spoken across more than 25 countries and FrancoFun is a chance to celebrate this incredible diversity.
While this celebration focused on French, it was also a way to celebrate our international community. Families across all of our languages played a key role in making this day special.
The festival opened with a performance by ISSA French students, who delighted the crowd and set a joyful tone for the rest of the morning.
The children’s activity stations at FrancoFun are inspired by the French Kermesse tradition. This year, classics like Chamboule Tout, pétanque, face painting, and Pêche à la ligne were back, giving kids the chance to play and laugh.
This year, FrancoFun brought some exciting new additions to the activity lineup. Louis Cardenas from The AM Project set up a DJ booth where kids got to try their hand at mixing music and discover the art of DJing. Also new this year was a soccer challenge and garçon de café relay. Students were given passports to collect “stamps” from Francophone countries by completing activities throughout the festival.
Of course, food is one of the best ways to introduce people to different cultures. The Buffet du Monde was once again a highlight of the day, featuring crêpes made by Philippe Place and his son Alex from Southerleigh Hospitality Group, fresh baguettes from Vincent Lacoste at Bakery Lacoste, and a wonderful return of Moroccan mint tea, brought by ISSA community member, Khadija. Every dish was a hit, and we cannot thank our contributors enough.
We were also honored to welcome Damien Watel, Honorary Consul and representative of the French community in San Antonio, who addressed the crowd and brought a special significance to the celebration.
A huge thank you to our volunteers, including students from UTSA, whose help was invaluable.
