On Saturday, March 29th, the International School of San Antonio held its annual Francofun Festival. Spread out over the school’s main campus, this festival highlighted Francophone countries around the world. From French Polynesia to Cameroon, there are over 25 countries in which French is one of, if not the, official language. While this celebration focused on French, it was also a way to celebrate our international community. Families across all of our languages played a key role in making this day special.
The children’s activity stations at Francofun are inspired by the French Kermesse. A Kermesse is a school festival typically held at the end of the school year. Children can play games and win small prizes. Parents usually volunteer and provide food to sell at the event. At Francofun, activity stations included “Chamboule Tout” and “Pêche à la ligne”, amongst many others. An exciting addition this year was our Cooking Activity with chef Philippe in which students made sauces from all around the world. Instead of prizes, ISSA gave out passports for students to fill up with “stamps” from French-speaking countries. By completing an activity, students would get a “stamp” in their passport.
Of course, food is one of the best ways to introduce people to different cultures. The international spirit was prevalent at the “Buffet du Monde”. This food and beverage stand included drinks from Morocco, cookies from Algeria, and crêpes from France. Some of this food was made by parents and volunteers, while Southerleigh Hospitality Group Co-Founder Philippe Placé and Brasserie Mon Chou Chou chef Philippe Blanchin prepared the rest. Every dish was absolutely delicious and we cannot thank our cooks enough.
Finally, one of the most exciting moments of the Francofun Festival was the performance by ISSA Primary School French students. Not only did they put on an amazing show, they set the stage for others to join in on their dance party. Students were able to show off how much they have learned in French throughout the school year and perfectly showcase what ISSA is all about!
